Vanisha Mittal is the daughter of the fifth richest man on the planet, Lakshmi N. Mittal. In 2007, proud father Mittal sent out 20-page invites in a silver box for Vanisha’s wedding to financier Amit Bhatia. The groom too, was nothing to sneeze at with a personal fortune running into millions. At the time, the shindig was considered the most expensive wedding in the world with a current price tag of $78 million. Guests came from all over the world to enjoy the luxurious food, glamorous location, and extravagance. The wedding was spread out over almost a week and it was beautiful.
Unfortunately, it’s hardly been ten years and the marriage seems to be on the rocks. With three children in the marriage, Vanisha seems to be tired of the long hours being put in by her financier husband. In 2014, Vanisha filed for divorce. According to sources in London, Mittal has clamped down on all publicity surrounding the divorce proceedings and very little has managed to percolate down to the masses. In London’s social circles, the Vanisha Mittal Bhatia divorce is the current buzz but even locals seem to know very little about what precipitated the divorce. Nothing is even known about whether the divorce is in process or whether it has concluded. Friends in the know state that custody and care of the children could also be one of the reasons why the divorce is so hush-hush and lengthy.
Another factor to be considered is the personal income of each of the divorcing parties. Considering the personal income of each group in the divorce its simple to say that the financial proceedings alone could several years to complete. This is because Vanisha Mittal has been ranked as the number one billionaire heiress in the world. Amit too, is nowhere near the poverty line with a personal fortune ranging in the high millions. With a marriage that cost 55 million euros ($60 million at the time), it’s only simple to say that this could be the most expensive and furiously fought divorces in the world.
The Vanisha Mittal Divorce
The Vanisha Mittal divorce shocked the world for a number of reasons. Recently there has been a media frenzy over the couple’s parting and both families have been put in the public spotlight. Here we’ll discuss why the divorce is worth so much attention.
In 2004, Vanisha Mittal and Amit Bhatia were happily married. At the time, Vanisha’s father was estimate to be worth 50 billion dollars. He spared no expense on his daughter’s union, spending about $78 million on the wedding alone. The wedding was held in Paris and lasted for several days. It was an extremely extravagant affair, and rated one of the most costly weddings of all time. It was also rated one of the largest parties that Paris had ever seen.
When someone throws a $78 million dollar investment into a simple wedding, you’d expect that the couple would at least never separate. However, Vanisha and Mittal are divorcing, which sees all that money going down the drain. As much as he loves his daughter, he certainly cannot be happy seeing so much money disappear for no reason. Even for someone who is worth billions of dollars, $78 million is still a very large sum.
To make matters worse, the wedding was a very public spectacle that was broadcasted in not only India, but also Europe and the rest of the world. When news of the divorce hit, it became a public embarrassment for the family. Amit is actually working for Vanisha’s father as an investment banker, so the divorce will likely make his workplace quite awkward in the coming months.
The Vanisha Mittal Bhatia divorce comes as a shock for a number of reasons, starting with the sheer amount of money spent on the ceremony. When Amit Bhatia and Vanisha Mittal married in 2004, Vanisha’s father – who was worth around $50 billion at the time – spent about $78 million on the wedding. It was an incredibly extravagant affair, held in Paris, that went on for days. It was labeled as one of the most expensive weddings of all time, as well as one of the largest parties that the city had ever seen.
After that, it seemed that the couple could never get divorced just because of the investment that Vanisha’s father had made. He does not get any of that money back just because of the Vanisha Mittal Bhatia divorce. He cannot be happy about having thrown away such a sum, only to see the union not stand the test of time. Even for someone who is worth so much, 78 million USD is a lot of money. On top of that, the wedding became a public affair, making the whole thing a rather embarrassing spectacle.
Furtherer, Amit works as an investment banker for Vanisha’s father. He has been very successful in his own right, winning awards and being recognized as one of the best in the business. Still, you have to think that the Vanisha Mittal Bhatia divorce will make things very awkward between him and his employer in the future, really straining that working relationship.
Celebrity weddings are often a great source of ideas and style inspiration for brides. While we can’t all throw weddings with six or seven figure price tags, most star weddings have some beautiful ideas than can easily be adapted for weddings with more typical budgets. These are some ideas on how to design a wedding inspired by Drew Barrymore‘s recent wedding celebration.
Start by choosing a beautiful outdoor location for your nuptials. Drew’s wedding was on her multi-million dollar estate, but you could just as easily rent the grounds of an historic mansion for the day to get the same effect. Pretty pink flowers were the main decoration for her backyard wedding. With a lush bouquet of hot pink peonies and pretty pink garden roses, you can have a bouquet just like Drew’s.
The Wedding Dress:
Leading up to the wedding, the biggest question was what would Drew Barrymore’s wedding dress look like. Ultimately the pregnant bride chose a custom Chanel gown made from pleated organza and muslin. Her gown had a jewel neckline with a dramatic ruffle around it and three quarter length sleeves. The skirt had tulle and feather flowers on it, and a black sash at the waist completed the couture creation. While the typical bride will not be ordering Chanel couture, there are certainly some lovely wedding gowns available with sleeves these days. Or choose a strapless dress and wear a fitted bolero with three quarter sleeves and a ruffle neckline over it. Add a black ribbon to the waist of your gown, and the look will be fabulous. Substitute glamorous cz bridal jewelry for her Chanel diamonds, and you will be gorgeous!
The food at Drew Barrymore’s wedding sounded great. The reception started with fancy appetizers and lobster rolls. Dinner was family style with steak and fried chicken (you didn’t expect Drew to do anything stuffy, did you?). These are easy things to incorporate into your own wedding, and certain to be crowd pleasers. Dinner was served with a custom label wine; instead of buying your own vineyard, simply order small bottles of wine with custom labels for your wedding favors. She ended the reception with a visit from a food truck, a popular wedding trend that many regular brides can emulate.
The music at Drew Barrymore’s reception was a 1980s cover band, which sounds like great fun. What really made it work, though, is that it reflected her personal style and taste. So if you and your fiance love bluegrass, hire a bluegrass band. Or hire a band that covers heavy metal power ballads if that is your taste; the point is that any great wedding reflects the personalities of the bride and groom. So even though you can borrow great ideas from a celebrity wedding, always remember to infuse your event with your own unique style as well.

I’ve been reading a lot of stuff about Kim Kardashian and her wedding with that basketball dude, Kris Humphries. It’s quite controversial, really. Lots of folks are criticizing her for getting married, then later filing a divorce in no less than 3 months, making the whole deal seem like a joke. The crowds are overacting, huh? Well, I think the reason why a lot of folks are mad is because the wedding itself was quite over the top! How over the top, you might ask? Unless you’re living under a rock, you could have seen how much publicity the wedding caught – from news, to your television, the whole ordeal was everywhere. What makes it controversial is that they got paid for the coverage. They’ve also spent millions for the wedding! How much, you ask? You should look at this infographic made by Brilliance.com to find out – as well as how much would an average American couple would normally pay for each item. You’d be surprised, trust me!

Weddings are expensive, there’s no doubt about it. From booking the venue right through to buying party favours, you can be certain of one thing… that you’re going to spend money – and lots of it!
For us humble mere mortals, we want to spend a modest penny that affords us the perfect day without sending us spiralling into debt. But what if you had the budget of let’s say, a celebrity? How lavish would you go? Here we take a look at some of the most incredible weddings only a superstar budget could afford…
Amit Bhatia and Vanisha Mittal
Amit – an investor banker from London – married Vanisha, daughter of Lakshmi Mittal (the owner of the largest steel company in the world), on June 22, 2004. One thousand guests received a 20 page silver book inviting them to the wedding which would be catered for by 45 chefs preparing 100 different dishes.
And the cost of such an A-star celebration? A cool £49 million!
Prince William and Catherine Middleton
The Royal Wedding was televised around the globe and was one of the most celebrated events of this century. On April 29th 2011, the world watched as Prince William married Kate Middleton in Westminster Abbey.
The wedding is rumored to have cost £20 million – including security. The bride’s dress was designed by British designer Sarah Burton of the House of Alexander McQueen, and reportedly cost £250,000! A princely sum that could quite easily buy you a very nice property in many areas of England.
Luckily, the couple saved money on the reception venue and opted to party the night away in one of Grandma’s reception rooms… and when Grandma is the Queen and her reception room is in Buckingham Palace, that’s quite a magnificent deal.
Andrei Melnichenko and Aleksandra Kokotovich
When the billionaire founder of MDM Bank married Serbian model Aleksandra Kokotovich on September 3rd 2005, guests were in for a surprise when they were serenaded by Whitney Houston and Christina Aguilera. Both singers received an estimated $3.6 million to perform and were flown in on private jets. When your budget is $30 million, only the best will do.
Al-Muhtadee Billah and Sarah Salleh
Al-Muhtadee Billah – the heir to the sultan of Brunei married Sarah Salleh on September 9th 2004. Truly extravagant, the wedding was attended by over 2000 guests including dignitaries such as foreign royal families and heads of governments, and was classed as the ‘Asian wedding of the year’. The bride wore a solid gold crown and the couple travelled in a gold open-topped Rolls-Royce.
Compared to the previous weddings mentioned, the cost seems modest at $5.7 million.
When Hollywood royalty – Liza Minnelli – married American concert promoter David Gest on March 16th 2002, it was always going to be an elaborate, over-the-top affair. With the Jackson Five as Groomsmen, Michael Jackson walking the blushing bride down the aisle, Elizabeth Taylor as Matron of Honour and Tony Bennett providing the entertainment, the wedding was set to be one of the glitziest, star-studded ceremonies the world of showbiz had ever seen. More than 1,000 guests were invited and each received a large box filled with gifts from the happy couple.
The wedding cost $4.2 million. The couple separated in 2003 and divorced in 2007.
You may not have the money available to afford a celebrity style celebration, but with careful budgeting, it is possible to still have a fairytale wedding.
Make sure you only spend what you can realistically afford and always shop around for the best deal. It really isn’t about extravagance – it’s about making sure you can start your happily-ever-after without debt. After all, who still wants to be paying for their ‘big day’ years after the event?
